Tell us about yourself and how LOAM came to be.

    JS

Always an adventurous soul, I made the move to NYC from Kentucky, where I was born and raised, after college to pursue my dream of working in fashion– specifically as a visual merchandiser and creative.  I became completely burnt out on that lifestyle after about seven years and found solace in my yoga practice which provided me the landscape to connect to something greater than myself.  Within that practice, I studied prenatal yoga and began to orient around holistic pregnancy, birth, and mothering—which were new concepts to me at that point. Fast forward a few years when I became pregnant with my daughter, and knew that I would follow what was an uncharted path for my recent lineage.  Only after becoming a mother and experiencing it all for myself did I see the massive expansion and beauty available to women who take a more holistic path.  I noticed the huge gap between the “mainstream” version of motherhood and the path that I had chosen–and observed for many of my friends which included lots of joy, bliss, and fulfillment. I noticed the lack of information and support available to women everywhere and felt called in my way to make some difference. That is when LOAM dropped into my being.  When I received the transmission for LOAM, I experienced it as a big burst of energy and excitement around how there should be a one-stop shop for consciously curated pieces to serve mothers on their breastfeeding journey and beyond.  Even the name for LOAM came through right away when I was very enthusiastically telling my husband of the idea that just came to me.  He said something about the love of a mother, I wrote that down, then looked up LOAM a few days later only to find that loam is fertile soil.  From there I heard “The love of a mother is the fertile soil from which all of Life springs forth”—that was it. Before that moment, I had never intended to launch a clothing line or brand, however, through visions, I was shown the people and places to turn to for help in bringing this offering to life.  The essence of LOAM is to tend to, and elevate, the experience of motherhood—all while honoring Mother Earth through the process.

Part of LOAM's mission is that it is a co-creation with Mother Earth. Can you tell us more about what you mean by this?

    JS

From the moment of conception, LOAM has been guided by a force beyond me. The entire line and way that it came to be, has been a divine transmission.  I have come to know this force as Great Mother or Mother Earth energy.  Surrendered to this guidance, LOAM is in service to Great Mother.  Choosing to work with the highest quality, organically grown raw materials that keep Mother Earth’s wellness at heart.  If we tend to the mother—both earth and woman—all life will benefit.

What is a lesson from Mother Nature that has taught you about motherhood?

    JS

I love this question. Nature is simple, surrendered to the creative force of life.  Nature has no mind to busy itself with, it is simply present and ever-changing.  Nature lives by cycles, going with the flow.  Motherhood can be exactly this. Mother Nature teaches me to drop into my body and my heart and ride the waves.  Motherhood really can be beautiful if we allow ourselves to simplify and focus on presence with our children.  Honoring the season and natural rhythm and being in nature as much as possible has been a huge support for me.

You've said that the fabric we wear affects our biology and frequency. What are some things we should be looking for in clothing if we want to raise our vibration?

    JS

Yes.  I am so happy to have found the study by Heidi Yellen, which confirmed what I had come to intuitively know through feeling better wearing natural fibers.  First, I would recommend curating a nice capsule of organic cotton basics that will resonate harmoniously with your body’s natural vibration.  If you’re looking to heal, or raise your vibration, try incorporating linen and wool into your wardrobe as they both vibrate at a very high frequency.  There’s one catch—linen and wool do not mix as their frequencies will cancel each other out. This is even mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. So, I love wearing organic cotton and linen or organic cotton with wool for that extra energy boost.

What is your current favorite piece from your capsule collection?

    JS

While I LOVE and LIVE in it all…I would say the one piece I wear the most is the Nourish Shirt Jacket.  This piece is a heavy lifter and I wear it constantly. My daughter was super sensitive to wool when she was younger and would always ask me to take off my sweater when she wanted to nurse. That made me cold and uncomfortable, so I set out to find a new way to support both mother and baby comfort with this piece.  Also, it can wrap all the way around you and your baby making it the perfect piece to pop outside together for that morning light.

What's next for LOAM? What are you excited about?

    JS

I have really been learning as I go when it comes to running a business in a way that honors exactly where I’m at on my journey.  As the only full-time employee at LOAM, I am keeping this offering super simple as my daughter and family are my main priority.  So, next up you can expect to see a few very thoughtful style updates for summer, and some new “neutral” colorways.  Other than that, I remain surrendered to this journey and look forward to the inspiration that could drop in at any moment.

LOAM is a co-creation with mother Earth bringing nourishment to mothers and women in all phases of their lifecycle. We are here to offer support as we collectively reclaim our divine ability to nourish our families.
